We're going to try another first. A national carp tournament. Please share this any and everywhere. This is a great opportunity to help the Nature and Raptor Center of Pueblo in a big way.

Flow 581
Water Temp 54
What a good day on the water.  I met two beginners at the nature Center and promptly moved to the Osprey Upper parking lot. We moved to the side channel and hooked up on one small bow.  There were fly fishers in every rock pile except the Pump House. We moved down and I had the opportunity to teach the tension cast and how to do a proper mend.  The results speak for them selves.  Jeremy caught on quickly and landed a nice 16 inch bow.  Ryan was next with his first trout on a fly rod ever.  It was all of 5 inches but the expression on his face tells it all.  It was the largest trout of his life!!  The only way he could go is up, and sure enough just before lunch he landed a nice 15 inch bow.  The water is crystal clear and beautiful in this section of the river.  The flows are going to go up beyond safe guiding soon.  Book your trip now, you won’t be sorry!

Lou

April 17, 2014,
Flow: 352
Water Temp: 45-55
We have so many great days with our guests it gets hard to delineate sometimes. Even though we’re a two man group we set a policy of interviewing the guide at the end of the day. From that and taking good notes we know this river during flood, famine and drought.
Lou’s report today was easy; He aided a pair of competent anglers  to the spots we know in a post spawn tailwater.  A peacock hurl gold bead ribbed zebra midge below a san juan kicked butt.
As the flows rise trust the local guides where to fish, cross and enjoy your day on our incredible tailwater.
Tight lines,

April 12, 2014
Flow:244
Water temp: 50-54
I hate to sound like a broken record but we love our jobs. Doing business outside the model of the fly shop has done us well but more importantly our guests see the value we see in them.
My guest for today Mark and I started at the flag hole and waited for the trout to wake up. Missing a few and playing the hole out I checked the flows and saw a bump around 11:00. Knowing where trout move in our tailwater I decided to hit one of my special spots with Mark and a few casts later it was fish on.  It was one of the first days on the water with tee shirts and burnt ears. Clear, cool water and sunny skies made for lots of sight fishing opportunities.
………
24 hours later… Low pressure and heavy clouds led to a snow that exceeded anyone’s expatiations and skittish trout.  I met Jay and Hunter at nine and we hit the water. The morning high was the highest it was going to get. Sleet turned to snow and to make things worse the Coyote Grille suffered a main line water line break and had to cancel their Sunday brunch. Lou pulled through on his day off and delivered lunch from the Daily Grind.
Eating in our vehicles with the heater running is not the typical operation standard of Steel City Anglers but today we had to make do(I guess we could have got Subway). Jay and Hunter cowboyd  up for another session and put trout in the net. Thick heavy wet snow made for a silent afternoon.
Blood midges below attractors were the only consistent fly.
When I got home I managed to lock my keys in the truck and spent a freezing hour breaking in. Still I had another day with great guests loving my job.
Tight lines,
Ben

April 10, 2014
Flow: 194
Water Temp: 50-56
Fishing is picking up on the tailwater. BWO hatches are picking up speed and a few caddis are emerging here and there. We’ve had a busy few weeks plagued by wind and cold snaps and I apologize for not getting out this report sooner. This week was a welcome relief with warm sunny skies on the same days we have guests. The Spawn is in full gear taking a number of the big trout out of the mix but it’s fun to see them. Above and below trout are suspended in 2-3 feet of water and sight fishing is great. An orange stimmy with a loop wing BWO dropper can provide for great days. Carrying two rods is important this time of year enabling you to switch tactics fast.
I finally had a few afternoons to do some fishing with friends in the afternoons and with another 16 left trips to go in April I’m happy to pump a rod and watch for the white flash as a trout takes a shallow nymphed bug.
Thanks Rick & Will, Marc & Robert, Karlee & Joshua, Laura & Ed, Brian, Larry, Jeff, Matt, Frank & Denise for great days out on the water.
